League of Legends is a complex game. A lot is going on, and you will be playing for thousands of hours before you even nail the basics. Even the pros are always learning something with each game that they play. if you are new to League, then you must understand the concept of a role.
When you play any League game, you will always have a role to fill. Your role is how you will be benefitting your team. Do your job well, and you will drastically increase your chances of winning.
On this page, we want to share the most effective strategies for each role in League of Legends. This is not intended to be a complete guide. Thousands of words have been written on playing the various roles effectively. This is just a quick primer to roles and their basic (but most effective) strategies.
We are only sticking to the five main roles here. We are not going to discuss sub-roles. That is even more complicated!
The top laners are the tanks and bruisers. These are the guys that are not afraid to charge headfirst into battle. They are going to be taking the bulk of the damage. As a top laner, your priority is on health and defense. Make yourself unkillable.
During the early stages of the game, your main strategy is to prevent the enemy champions from farming minions. You may want to pick off a couple of minions yourself too, but that isn't the priority.
As the game goes on, you are going to be focused on getting to where your teammates need you, and you can do this using a teleport spell. The best top laners will be able to teleport into the fray and quickly control the situation.
If you are playing in the top lane, then you must learn about enemy champion control, and you need to ensure that you understand positioning. Learning how to kite is a top strategy here. It means that you can draw the focus of an enemy while taking very little damage.
In the early game, the best strategy for a mid-lane player is to farm those last-hit kills. Your goal is to rack up as much gold and XP as possible. This is because, once you hit the home stretch of the game, a good mid-lane player can mean the difference between success and failure.
When you play in the mid lane, there are two things that you need to do:
Mid-lane players should be boosting their power levels rapidly. The position of a mid-laner means that if one of your teammates is in trouble, you can quickly help them out. A good mid-lane player will be constantly chatting with their teammates, encouraging pings, etc.
If you are playing in the mid-lane, make sure that you are always looking to push through the minions. That mid-lane needs to be cleared for later on in the game.
A mid-laner who slacks can cost a team a game, even if everybody else performs to the best of their ability. If you have no control over the mid, then you have no control over anything.
As attack damage carry, you have one job and one job only; to farm as many kills as you can. Marksmen work incredibly well for this, but only if the player understands proper positioning.
While ADC champions are very weak defensively, they can pump out more damage than any other champion in the game. Well-powered ADCs will guarantee success when the time comes to launch your final assault on the enemy's ancient.
Once your ADC champion is powered up, then stick with some other players (preferably tankier top laners) that can provide you with much-needed defense while you rapidly kill your opponents.
Later on in the game, the ADC's power will allow them to target the objectives. They shouldn't go at it alone. ADCs are often the target of the opponent's ire.
The jungler has a lot of jobs in League. Many regard them as one of the toughest classes to play because they require an intimate knowledge of the map. They need to have spent a ton of time working on their farming routes, while also needing to be a dab hand at ganking opponents. This role isn't for low-skilled players!
As a jungler, your strategy should consist of two things:
Filling these roles is going to be tough enough, but you also have an enemy jungler who has the same goal in mind. You need to stop your opponent. Know where they are at all times, and learn how to gank them.
The best junglers will know how to optimize their movement speed and positioning. If you want to be a great jungler then we suggest that you spend a good chunk of your time working on crowd-control strategies.
As a support champion, you will mostly be a pocket healer/buffer for your ADC. Your job is to ensure that the ADC is pumping out the maximum amount of damage and they don't die.
Along the way, good support should be dropping wards down. This will provide your team vision of key areas of the map.
While you can do some damage as a support, this isn't your priority. It shouldn't even factor into your strategy. Your main goal is to always buff and heal your teammates.
Later on in the game, your role will extend beyond the ADC. You will be expected to keep everybody's health topped up and their skills buffed, particularly during that final push.
